DollyPOP Piece

Afternoon, true believers!  I and a few of the other Mammals are going to be represented in World of Wonder Gallery’s upcoming DOLLYPOP show.  The focus is on country music legend Dolly Parton.  I believe Benjamin, Matt, Devin, and I are all participating.  If you’re in the L.A. area, check it out in person.  For my part, I portrayed the grand dame as a gunfighter.  Dignity and exploitation mixed, you know?  Anyway, Enjoy…

I Am 8-Bit (late-bit)

I’m a little late to the draw here, but I wanted to make mention of the 2008 “I Am 8-Bit” show that just went down a couple weeks back in LA’s World of Wonder Gallery. Tom Forget, Ben Marra, and myself all had pieces in the show. You can see pics of all the fabulous work here, here and here. Up top is the mushroom head I constructed for those suckers.

Mike and the Mad Dog Rest in Peace?

This is another piece I recently completed for the New York Times that reflects upon the storied, not-always-so-civil discourse between the now defunct sports radio duo, Mike and the Mad Dog. The reporter, Bryan Curtis, doesn’t exactly liken their professional split to a divorce, but he does make some interesting comments about how their on-air relationship was inevitably headed towards pushing its own self-destruct button. The article, for those who are still lamenting their split, can he read here. Also, additional sketches that wound up on the cutting room floor are over at my motherboard.

The Ghost Who Walks!

Evening, audience - I recently completed a painting that’s going to be entered in a contest that Moonstone Publishing is holding.  They’re starting a new PHANTOM series, and the third alternate cover will be the winner.  This is my submission.  Wish me luck!

Illustration in RADAR Magazine

Here’s an illustration I have in the current issue of RADAR Magazine. It’s for a feature on the worst colleges in America which includes, “Biggest rip-off college,” “Most degenerative student body,” and “Ugliest campus,” etc. It’s a great, hilarious feature. The apples on the bottom row serve as markers for different sections of the article. - Benjamin

…of no particular importance.

P.S. The release party for 002 is in the works! We’ll keep y’all posted. In the meantime if you can’t stands to waits no longers…go get yourself a copy of Issue 002 at the store!

Who Loves Dollars?

Book Covers Anonymous gave a quick shout out to my cover design for I Love Dollars which came out earlier this year. A few pictures of the wraparound layout are over this way.

Interview on Illustrophile

I have an interview up on the illustration blog Illustrophile. You can read it here. Thanks to the wonderful Charlene Chua (who’s beautiful work can be seen here). - Benjamin

The Ballad of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac

Given how lousy, depressed and out-and-out terrifying the housing market is, there’s a substantial amount of guilt attached to how much fun it was to do this piece for the Sunday New York Times. The article, in essence, suggests that the recently approved housing bill (designed to bail out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac) is a wretched piece of legislation, but still necessary; Necessary insomuch as that it should be a precursor to ultimately liquidating the two mortgage giants over the long term and letting multiple smaller savings and loan businesses absorb their work.

This illustration was originally spec’d at 6.5″ x 8″ but was clearly, um, augmented. Big ups to Kim Bost at the Times for wrangling the crazy idea of re-working it to wind through the article itself. That’s thinking on your feet.

Additional ideas that were submitted prior to choosing a direction can be seen here.

Tom (and Benjamin and Devin too) is 8-Bit

Evening, slackers. While you were picking lice out of your neighbor’s hair, I completed a new painting. It’s for the annual I AM 8-BIT gallery show out in sunny Los Angeles. All of the pieces deal with 80s video games in some respect. Mine’s about Bionic Commando, a game I loved but paradoxically never purchased. The show runs from 8/14 to 9/7 at the World of Wonder Storefront Gallery in Hollywood. Check it out if you get a chance. It’s going to feature work from fellow MAMMALS Devin Clark and Benjamin Marra, and it’s been organized by our friends from NERDCORE publishing.

Wig out,
